The colorful, rectangular image near the top of this website is a heavily-modified, cropped, slanted and paneled image of metastatic breast cancer cells (NCI image AV-8803–3303). The original picture shows the BC cells as they appeared upon staining for examination with a light microscope.
The banner serves two main purposes:
1) to remind any reader who comes upon Medical Lessons that this is a blog, and not a medical journal or an entirely serious source of health information (see disclaimer);
2) to remind the author that she used to spend much of her time examining malignant cells by microscopy and enjoyed that work immensely.
